Salah can build on record-breaking season, warns Milner
James Milner insists Mohamed Salah is not a one-season wonder, with the Liverpool veteran confident his star team-mate can enjoy another record-breaking campaign. Liverpool forward Salah took Anfield by storm last season, scoring 44 goals in all competitions and 32 in the Premier League following his arrival from Roma. Salah – who suffered a shoulder injury in Liverpool's Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid – walked away with the Premier League's Golden Boot and Player of the Year among other individual honours. After enjoying a goalscoring return in Liverpool's 2-1 victory over Manchester City at the International Champions Cup on Wednesday, Milner believes the Egyptian sensation can build on his 2017-18 exploits. "The best players in the world aren't known because they just did it in one season, they do it over and over again. He is more than capable of doing that," Milner said. "I think obviously there is pressure when you've had one good year to deliver again. I think he's a top player, he's shown that and he's going to keep improving. "We need to keep improving as a side with him as well and make sure that all the pressure is not on his shoulders to deliver goals and get us out of tough situations. "It's down to all of us to help him be the best player he can and do that as part of a team." Now that's what you call making an impact!!  Follow @MoSalah from the bench to the scoresheet vs @ManCity with our special player cam... pic.twitter.com/ntEUvMlgSG — Liverpool FC (@LFC) July 26, 2018 Salah's performances alerted some of Europe's giants, with Champions League holders Madrid linked to the 26-year-old. However, Salah signed a new five-year contract earlier in July to pledge his future to Liverpool. "I was never worried, personally," Milner said. "There's always going to be stories when players do well. You saw how well he played last season, improving, and he seems happy so I don't see any reason why he'd want to go. "That's what happens when you have good players. That's a positive thing for us that when there's speculation about your players it means that they are playing well and performing, and he obviously has."

Wellington Phoenix adds Mitch Nichols, David Williams to A-League squad
Tim Cahill says he was surprised by the passion of A-League fans on his return to Australia. ESPN FC's Shaka Hislop explains why he doesn't see Usain Bolt's six-week A-League trial as anything more than a piece of commercialism. Wellington Phoenix coach Mark Rudan is hoping to eke the best out of two former Socceroos after signing Mitch Nichols and David Williams. The A-League veterans are the first Australians Rudan has lured to the Kiwi club and the first players with attacking intent. Midfielder Nichols, 29, was without a club after one of his less productive campaigns last season, scoring one goal in 13 appearances for Perth Glory. Striker Williams, 30, is leaving the Hungarian top flight after spending almost three...

Whatever b******t you say, no one forgets – Klopp defends spending comments
Jurgen Klopp insists his 2016 comments criticising the eagerness to splash the cash in modern football are still true despite his own lavish spending in recent times at Liverpool. When Manchester United signed Paul Pogba in 2016, Klopp was critical and adamant he would "even do it differently if I could spend that money". But since then, Liverpool have made Virgil van Dijk and Alisson the most expensive defender and goalkeeper of all time, while the club have also spent more than £40million each on Mohamed Salah, Naby Keita and Fabinho. And following the signing of Alisson on Thursday, Klopp's 2016 quotes resurfaced and were put to him in a news conference, drawing a fiery response. "That's a problem, whatever b******t you say, no one will forget it," Klopp told reporters on Saturday. There are four new faces in the #LFC squad this summer, but what will @Alissonbecker , @XS_11official , @_fabinhotavares and Naby Keita bring to the Reds? Jürgen Klopp gave his verdict in Charlotte tonight: https://t.co/DhlOBUdGAC pic.twitter.com/qEKa5f2gai — Liverpool FC (@LFC) July 21, 2018 "It's still kind of true. I couldn't have imagined the world could have changed. £100m [for Pogba] was a crazy number, but since then the world changed. "We signed the most expensive goalkeeper, there will be a few nice transfers [made by other clubs]. It's not about pushing through my thoughts on that and not paying big money, if Liverpool aren't successful we have to work. "To improve a squad like this costs money. So far it's a really good year for us, pretty successful last year. "Still we need to replace players - Emre Can left, good business bringing Fabinho in. [Xherdan] Shaqiri, we saw him play in the World Cup. I know Stoke were relegated, but he had a lot of good games. "We don't care what the world think, like Manchester United didn't care what I thought."

Manchester United have completed the signing of goalkeeper Lee Grant from Stoke City for a reported fee of £1.5million. Grant, 35, is expected to serve as United's number three behind David de Gea and Sergio Romero after agreeing a two-year contract.
